An afternoon with Mum and Dad

After an unusually long afternoon nap, we decided to take Micah out to run some errands. We thought he would probably last a few hours since he had such a long nap. We managed to get quite a few things done which was great, but on the drive home, Micah quietly fell asleep in his car seat. He must have been really exhausted.

When we got home, he was still asleep so we both just sat in the car and waited. Micah eventually woke himself up about 15 minutes later and was in a much better mood after his little power nap.

Micah naps

Let me recharge...

Since it was still bright outside, we took him out to the playground and let him sit in the baby swing all by himself. He’s still a little too small for it, but he seemed to like it and gave us lots of wide smiles.

Look Im in a swing all by myself!

Look I'm in a swing all by myself!

Swing...yay!

Swing...yay!

Micah takes a little bit of rice cereal now everyday just to get him used to eating solid foods. I’m not sure he understands the concept of eating yet. The rice cereal we give him is just one of the many things he gets to “taste”. Here he’s trying out one of his (many) teething toys just before we started feeding him his real food. This was one that his Grandma gave to him when she was here a few months ago.

Hmm... this tastes good

Half a year old today

Happy 1/2 year old birthday Micah!

Since daddy was playing the bass on worship team at church today, we decided this morning that he should take the car, instead of dragging the heavy and bulky bass on and off the train. Our worship team usually meets 3 hours before the service starts on Sundays to set up, as well as to run through the songs. That meant that I would get to take Micah for his first train ride to church, on his 1/2 year old birthday!

As soon as Micah was done with his morning nap, I dressed him in his new Marks & Spencers outfit – a gift from the Murdochs earlier, all the way from the UK. The 6-9 months old outfit is a perfect fit for Micah right now! (Thanks, Sue and Alistair!) I carried Micah in the Baby Bjorn, front facing, so he was able to see everything I saw. We got to the station, waited on the platform, got on and then off the train three stops later. Micah looked indifferent throughout the 5 – 10 minutes’ trip. He was not exceedingly happy, just alert and contented. Hmm, as the mum, I thought of the first trip on the train for my baby as a special experience. I suppose everything is equally exciting for Micah right now.

So what’s new this past month?

1. Takes one bottle a day happily from daddy;

2. First teeth! The two bottom teeth finally made their appearance;

3. Sitting up, supported by two arms;

4. Very bubbly and able to say “ba-ba-ba”, “bao-bao-bao”;

5. Settling into a nice nap routine, one in the morning, and another in the afternoon.

Napping. Notice Micah's new "spiky" hair? They are actually extremely soft to touch!

The highlight of the month is perhaps trying solids for Micah. We bought some infant rice cereals about a week ago and finally decided to give him some yesterday. Believe it or not, Micah loved the cereal and finished it within seconds! It was a small portion – 1 tablespoon of cereal mixed with 2 tablespoons of breast milk. We are so proud of him! We gave him the same amount again today; and this time, we managed to take some pictures:

Waiting...

Waiting...

Yum!

Here we go...

Yum!

Yum!

I want more...

I want more...

After the meal, we hung out on the balcony for some bubbles, with Micah in his new M & S outfit, and the Baby Bjorn carrier!

Where are my bubbles?

Where is my bubble?

Yeah!

Here you are!

Yeah!

Yay!

Where has it gone?

Where has it gone?

My Favorite Things

Filed under: baby writes — micahchan @ 12:35 am

Big toes and small toes, and fingers for sucking
Voices of children and sights of kids playing [picture coming soon]
Bubbles bursting on my nose and my cheek [picture coming soon]
These are a few of my favorite things

Songs sung by mommy and tunes played by daddy [picture coming soon]
Breeze from the east and west, walks down the alley [picture coming soon]

Views from the stroller the trees and the sky
These are a few of my favorite things

Little animals on the wall and the lamp shade

Kick n play bouncer, music in my play yard

Knick knack and what not all over my toys
These are a few of my favorite things

When the dog barks
When I’m weary
When I’m feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so bad

Micah’s First “Formal” Music Lesson!

Filed under: mum writes — micahchan @ 10:44 am

Mum writes:

We had a Gymboree experience yesterday morning! It was a Music Class for ages 6 – 16 months. Even though Micah is two weeks shy of 6 months, I decided to sign up anyway to get a sense of how baby music classes are run at Gymboree Play and Music. It was a free class to mark the beginning of the Fall season, so we had nothing to lose!

There were five babies with moms. Though the youngest of all, Micah turned out to be one of the tallest babies, second only to a 14 month old girl. Micah was a little pensive at the start, but attentive and responsive as soon as he felt more warmed up to the new faces and surroundings. His favorite moment was probably when the song “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” came up. We’ve been singing the song so much at home that Micah probably knows it all by heart. His little face not only lit up when the teacher started the tune, there was an obvious look of “understanding” in his eyes. The teacher did a good job in keeping all the babies occupied with different styles of songs, and introduced them to quite a variety of toy percussive instruments.

I think Micah had a great time, but we probably won’t go back at least for a while. I certainly think Micah can benefit from the peer stimulation and I did like the fact that the lessons were well structured. (E.g., the class started and ended with a “welcome” and “goodbye” song respectively. There was a song for “clearing away” the toys too). I can also imagine how routine repetition of the songs with movement on a weekly basis would help build a sense of security and breed confidence.

However, 45 minutes of continuous sound and movement seems a little too intense for a 5 – 6 month old. The singing, drumming and jingling, as well as some fussing and crying (some of our little friends protested when toys were being removed from them) all added up to be somewhat loud at times. Micah showed some signs of weariness at the end of the class, though he cheered up as soon as we stepped out of the building into the open air. As far as the music is concern, We have been singing, dancing or tapping to different genres of music at home a lot already. We could probably use some toy percussive instruments too; so looking out for some infant musical instruments shall be mommy’s next assignment!

For positive peer influence, I think it would be quite sufficient for now just hang out at the playground or arrange to have play dates with other kids. Who knows, if I manage to gather enough toy instruments, we could even consider a routine 20 – 30 minutes “baby music time” with Micah’s and all his young friends here at our home. We’ll see…

All in all, it was still a wonderful experience at Gymboree. As soon as we got back from the event yesterday, Micah napped by himself again, slept soundly for more than 3 hours in the afternoon and woke up all happy and bubbly!

Micah Laughs

Dad writes:

We’ve noticed that Micah has started to laugh out loud a lot more these days. I managed to grab a short recording of him doing just that right before bed time. It’s definitely a great way to end the work week.

Afternoon Stroll

I usually take Micah out for a walk in the afternoon if the weather is good. This gives him a chance to be outside the confines of our apartment for a bit. He seems to really enjoy looking up at the trees or watching cars drive by. I think we’ll try to take more walks before the weather turns cold. I’m still holding out for a few more good summer days even though it’s already September…

A happy baby

Filed under: dad writes — micahchan @ 2:15 am

Dad writes:

There are moments in the day when Micah is really bubbly and happy – usually after a good, long nap. We managed to catch one of those moments today on camera.

Micah would smile a little when he was just a few weeks old, but was not very interactive for the first few months. Just providing basic care for a young infant can get pretty draining. Now, at 5 months old, Micah’s wide smiles and enthusiastic vocal responses provide mum and dad with some comforting reassurance that as parents, we’re at least doing something right.
