Being Micah

A couple of days ago we (Christina, me, my mum and dad and Micah) were able to all go out to Giordano’s and have a sit down dinner. It’s been a while since we went out to a restaurant and I wasn’t sure if Micah would cooperate. It’s hard enough sitting down for dinner at home, so I wasn’t sure that eating out would be any different.

Just to make sure, I called them up ahead of time to find out if it was cool if we brought in a little infant to dinner with us. The lady on the other end told was pretty reassuring and told me that me it was totally fine to bring in our baby.

Turns out it wasn’t so bad. We only got there around 9pm and the big dinner crowd had cleared out by then. Micah was happy to be in his car seat in the beginning and then when he got a little fidgety, I just carried him and rocked him to sleep. The pizza was pretty good as well. We had some cheezy garlic bread as an appetizer and two 10inch pizzas, one thin crust and the other stuffed Chicago style. We were there for at least a couple of hours before Micah started to fuss for real, at which point we had pretty much eaten out fill, so we just headed home. All in all, a pretty good experience for Micah’s first time out at a restaurant.

We forgot to take a picture of the pizza when it was served, so here are some pics of the leftovers…

Toys (Part 1)

Daddy writes:

You have to be pretty creative to come up with an idea for a baby toy. Micah’s been collecting quite a few of them lately, thanks in part to his Mum’s talented Freecycle scouting skills, some savvy curbside shopping by a few of our good friends and of course, all the stuff we were showered with at Christina’s, well, baby shower(s).

So anyway, I was checking out all these fancy kid’s toys and I noticed some really interesting ones. I thought I’d make an attempt to document some of these and maybe categorize them into different groups. So here goes.

This first “species” I’ve dubbed as the “something-stuck-in-something else toy” or for those of you who like acronyms, the S.S.I.S.E. toy. This one is really weird to me, but the basic design it pretty similar. It’s basically an object that has another smaller object “imprisoned” in it. For example:

At first I thought it was some sort of puzzle, you know, like the a rubik’s cube, but it’s not. You can try all you like, but there is absolutely no way you can the smaller object out of the bigger object – it’s stuck. I suppose that’s a good thing, since the tiny caged in bell is a potential choking hazard. Still, the whole thing just feels like a really cruel joke to play on a 3 month old.

Has anyone else come across this kind of baby toy? I’d like to hear/see what other iterations there might be of the SSISE toy…

At 4 in the morning

Christina has been doing a great job of being patient with the baby, especially during the wee hours of the morning when I’m fast asleep and Micah’s all fussy and upset. He seems to pick the most inconvenient hours of the day to be difficult, but Christina never fails to maintain her cool. She’ll talk to him and sing him songs while he bawls his eyes out for no apparent reason.

Interestingly enough, each morning, we have the same little converstion

Me: So how many times did he get up to feed?
Christina: oh, 2 or 3 times I guess.
Me: Really? I thought he got up just once…

So apparently I’m sound asleep through most of Micah’s midnight snack hours. Just goes to show that Christina’s not only patient, she’s getting way less sleep than I am. How she manages to stay calm and collected while surviving on 2 hour chucks of sleep is a mystery to me.

My second set of grandparents (my dad’s parents) have been here for about two weeks now. They’re always happy to see me and give me tons of attention. Grandpa let’s me sleep on his tummy and Grandma is always talking to me and telling me jokes. I really like having them around!

An English Encounter

Yesterday we had a chance to meet up with a couple of Christina’s friends from her student days over in the UK. Graham and Chris Hilton happened to be in town and we were both excited to meet them. Christina and the Hiltons went to Carey Baptist Church in Reading, UK. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with them over Papa John’s pizza and Tiramisu cake. Under normal circumstances, we would have probably cooked a meal and had some decent food, but I think everyone enjoyed the somewhat casual dining experience.

In fact, the Hiltons are the first formal visitors we’ve had over in a long time. I was a little nervous at first, wondering how Micah would behave and whether or not we would be able to sit down and have a decent conversation.

Things actually turned out better than expected. Micah was up for about a half and hour or so when the Hilton’s arrived and he was all happy and smiley (like he usually is with visitors). We managed to take a few photos of Micah with his new friend “Spencer Bear” (a gift from Graham and Chris) which is in fact his second teddy bear gift so far.

Soon after, Micah started to fuss so Christina took him upstairs to feed while I chatted with our guests. Not long after, Christina came back down, the pizza arrived and we all sat down for dinner. Micah fussed a little around 8pm so I went up, rocked him in my arms for about a half hour and then put him down to sleep.

After that we were both able to sit and talk for a good two hours while Micah slept upstairs. We had the baby monitor close by just in case, but other than a couple of squeaks every now and then, Micah stayed sound asleep.

All in all, I thought the evening went really well. Christina and me got to take turns looking after Micah and entertaining our guests at the same time and I think we make a good team. I feel like we’re taking small steps to becoming a functional family unit. Soon we’ll be able to get outside, maybe take a walk to the lake, go to church on Sundays, meet up with friends… all very exciting stuff.

I guess it’s all about figuring a good system that each family member is comfortable with. We never really had a chance to do that since we’ve had relatives over helping us for the last 6 weeks. Now that we’re on our own, we’re forced to really make things work.

We’re still not perfect. This morning we ran out of wet wipes in the middle of a rather large pooping session which was kind of annoying. I had to run out to the grocery store to get more supplies which I really should have done sooner. It’s a learning process I guess but I like to think that we’re on the right track.

Goodbye, we’ll miss you

Today grandpa and grandma left for home. They’ve been here with us for six whole weeks and we’ll really miss them. Thanks for coming all this way and for taking care of mum and dad while they took care of me. We hope to see you again soon. Have a safe flight and take care!

I’m 6 weeks old

It’s been 6 whole weeks already – time really does fly. So many new things to see, so much stuff to figure out, it’s quite a trip. Mostly I just eat and sleep though. I get really hungry every two hours and mum and dad don’t get much sleep because of me. My stomach is only about the size of a large chicken egg though, so who can blame me?

I’m letting mummy leave the house to go run errands every now and then. She can’t be gone for more than two hours though, that’s as long as I can go without any food. Dad keeps me company when mum’s out and about. He’s cool, although I wish he could feed me when mum’s not around.

The best time of day for everyone is when I’m sound asleep…zzz…

So I finally managed to get a blog of baby Micah up and running. I figured that since all his uncles, aunts, grandparent and other relatives live so far away, it would be nice to blog about our new lives as parent(s) and child.

They say 6 weeks is a milestone for a newborn baby. Honestly, it feels more like 6 days. The first few weeks were like a roller-coaster, one moment you’re absolutely exhilarated, the next moment you’re just dead tired and exhausted.

Slowly but surely, we’re starting to feel like we can be “normal” human beings again. I’ve been able to go back to work and actually get stuff done, mum has had a chance to go out of the house a couple of times and we even managed to all drive to JC Penney to get our photos taken with Micah’s grandparents. Our next goal is to start going back to church on Sundays again and maybe be on worship team like we used to.

One thing about having a baby is that it kind of makes you think back to your own childhood. I grew up watching sesame street and I came across this one of Grover monster. He makes prepositions so much fun.
